Hey Guys!! What’s up!?

Last week I had a great opportunity to interview my friend Jay Matharu. Originally from London, UK and now based in Uppsala, Sweden Jay Matharu is no stranger to the world of music.  Since he was a teenager he has been obsessed with playing and writing music in a wide variety of different genres.

As a band member of Mahavira, String Theory, Maleficent, Mindshift, The MTS Trio, and We the Faceless, he has wielded his axe on many a stage around Europe.

His last challenge was write an album in 100 days! And He got it! So now we have these amazing songs in one album called “These Clouds are so Undisciplined”. Unusual name and unusual challenge! But our friend Jay will explain every little detail about it.
The interview was amazing! We just set it up a time on Skype and start to talking about music, career, gear, strangers and funnies histories in music life! One of the most relaxed interview that we’ve ever had!

Here we talked about his beginning in the music world, gear, his new album, influences, internet, new and futures projects and more…. Check this out my friends!
Taking this moment to say that I’m so thankful my friend Jay for this wonderful interview! It was a pleasure to be in contact with you and who knows in the future we can do some project together. Thank you my friend!

Fala Galera!

E ele conseguiu! Então temos o “These Clouds are so Undisciplined”.

1-) First of all, tell us a little bit about your beginning, What about the challenges? And who are your first influences?
I started when I was around 12 or 13 years old, at that time I wanted to play songs by Guns n’ Roses. I grew up in a small village in South Ireland and the only guitar teacher was a guy who played classical guitar and unfortunately he didn’t teach me the songs that I liked. So I learned some basic things and then gave up! Shortly after I started to teach myself, learning and playing the songs that I liked… Nirvana, Guns n’ Roses and more.

2-) Now a days, in your free time, what  you have studied? And what kind of music and guitar players you have listened?
I grew up listening Alice in Chains, Nirvana and others! After that I started to listen to Racer X, Yngwie Malmsteen, Paul Gilbert, Richie Kotzen, Greg Howe… I really learned a lot from those guys! And many others too… Like Dream Theater… Going back in time… Rush and Genesis too… Nowadays I’m listening and studying mainly jazz and fusion, trying out different concepts from classical music and jazz improvisation.

3-) Do you know something about Brazilian guitar players? Could you mention some names?
Kiko Loureiro! That guy is absolutely insane! And Gustavo Assis Brasil, a fusion guitar player, he is amazing, I really appreciate Bossa Nova too! Another band that I like from Brazil is Sepultura! Roots Album is fantastic!

3-) Conhece alguma coisa sobre os guitarristas brasileiros? Poderia mencionar alguns nomes?
Kiko Loureiro! Outro nome que posso me lembrar é o Sepultura! O Roots é um álbum fantástico!

4-)You just released your first authoral work called "These Clouds Are So Undisciplined!" Talk a little about this work.
In the last couple of years I played in a lot of cover bands, but wasn’t writing or playing any original music. After seeing a clip of a guy learning to sweep pick within 100 days on youtube. I decide to write and record an album within 100 days. In the middle of the writing process, when the songs started to take shape I decided to invite some guest musicians and started the recording sessions!

4-) Recentemente você lançou seu primeiro trabalho autoral intitulado “These Clouds Are So Undisciplined!”
No meio desse processo as músicas começaram a tomar forma, então convidei alguns músicos e começamos as gravações!

5-) Are you planning something like a tour, concerts or guitar clinics?
Not at this moment! Hopefully early next year I’ll get a band together and start gigging this project, but at the moment I have other projects going on! But I am planning it!

6-) About your gear, what do you use in studios and stages? Have many differences between them?
I come from the old school, so I like the presence of speakers on the stage, I really like to feel this energy when I play live! I love to feel the vibration from the speakers when I play! It gives me another dynamic to play with. But for my small apartment and for easy recording it is nice to play direct in, so for these situations I use an Engl head into TwoNotes WOS cabinet impulse software. For quick demos I use BIAS and Guitar Rig. Which also sounds really good! For this album I mainly used my Strandberg Singularity TT guitar, a Blade strat for my solo on “Illumination” and a Gibson Les Paul for “A Mother’s Love”. I also used a Wampler Tumnus pedal for rhythm sounds and a Wampler Dual Fusion pedal for leads.

Me trás outra dinâmica!

7-)Easy to realize a lot of rock, jazz and fusion influences in your music, but everything sounds great! What about your main influences for this work?
I always worked in bands from rock and heavy metal style! And always shared the guitar parts with another guitar player. Always working with two guitar players in a band! And was very simple! One recorded one track and the other guitar player recorded the other track! For this album it was very different… In the same song I recorded many guitar tracks, but then I realize that it was too much! For this record I wanted something very clean and clear, so my recording process was very different, just two tracks one for the Right and other from the Left and some effects like delays and reverbs. I thing this sounds super clean and nearer the sound I wanted! As a reference I used A perfect Circle’s “thirteenth step” and Plini’s “Sweet Nothings” EP. Plini sounds so clean, and a clean sound was very important for me. Max worked a lot in the mixing and mastering process to get everything sounding balanced! Like a lot of the new records that are coming out nowadays!

8-) Could you make a brief analysis of the influential internet in music studies and also in the professional music universe?
Yeah! Now a days we have internet and youtube! So we don’t have that old idea of having an idol anymore! Your idols are on youtube. So we just sit in front of the computer and start watching almost anything we want! I’m not so good with recording videos! I don’t like to be in front of the camera. It’s a difficult situation for me! I start to burble and words disappear from my mind! But I’m trying to get better at it. There are many people who are really natural and make many great videos who get more and more popular with likes and views!

Sim! Atualmente temos a internet e youtube! Começo a gaguejar...

9-) What about the greatest moment in your career or a greatest concert?
Oh! Really Difficult to say! You know when you’re in a band, travelling and playing many gigs? I have many fun situations like that that.  One of the best moments was when I and some friends, locked ourselves in a studio in Budapest for three days! It was the great experience in my life! Because there wasn’t any interruptions! We lived and played all long day for three days straight! We had a great connection in our playing together!

10-) “These Clouds are so Undisclipened!” Is a very unusual name! What drives you to think is this name?
I was at a festival with a group of friends chilling out, lying in the grass looking at the sky. All of a sudden my my friend jumps up and says “these clouds are so undisciplined”. We all laughed hysterically. When I was a few weeks into the writing process, I remembered and thought it would be a great name for the album.

10-) “These Clouds Are So Undisciplined!”
“These Clouds are so Undisclipened!”

11-) To finish, we would like to thank you so much for this interview! And ask you to give a short message for your fans, Guitar Tech´s readers and all Brazilians guitar players.
Thank you very much for giving me your time, if you want to buy my record I recommend Bandcamp, Cd Baby or Spotify Streams. And just play music to have fun, because if you aren’t enjoying it, nothing will feel good, just play something, try different things, improvise! Play different styles and different chords, try to feel different sonorities and different harmonies! And always have fun! Thank you!

Sejam Felizes! Muito obrigado!
