Entrevista :: Hedras Ramos

Hi Fellows!!! How are you my friends??

After some months without news here in Guitar Tech, I bring to you a very nice interview with one of the biggest talent in the guitar in latest years! We´re talking about Hedras Ramos! in this interview Hedras talk about his beginning, gear, career, some projects, future plans, internet and other thing about guitar and music!



Hedras came to be recognized as a great guitar player in 2009 after attending in one of the greatest guitar contest in the world, called Guitar Idol, in this year we have some brazilians guitar players like Oziel Filho, Gustavo di Pádua and Gustavo Guerra!!

Since this Hedras start work with guitar clinic and shows around the world, taking part of greatest guitars fest, like Jason Becker´s "Not dead yet", playing with Kiko Loureiro, composing instrumental songs, he has four instrumental albums released and he´s working in a new album that comes up next year!!!Check it out!!!

Depois de alguns meses sem novidades aqui no Guitar Tech, eu trago até vocês uma entrevista muito legal com um dos grandes talentos dos últimos anos! Estamos falando de Hedras Ramos! Nessa entrevista Hedras conta um pouco sobre seu início na música, equipamento, carreira, alguns projetos, planos futuros, internet e outras coisas sobre o universo da música e guitarra!

Hedras passou a ser reconhecido como um dos destaques na guitarra em 2009 após participar de um dos maiores concursos de guitarra, o Guitar Idol, que inclusive nesse ano teve a participação de alguns guitarristas nacionais,tais como Oziel Filho, Gustavo Guerra e Gustavo Di Pádua.

Após isso Hedras começou a trabalhar com clínicas de guitarra e shows por todo o mundo, participando de grandes festivais tais como Jason Becker´s "Not dead yet" o qual tocou junto com o Kiko Loureiro, compondo músicas instrumentais, ele possui quatro álbuns lançados, e está trabalhando em seu quino álbum que deverá ser lançado no ano que vem!!! Confiram!!!

1-) First of all, tell us a little bit about your beginning, What about the challenges? And who are your first influences?

I started play guitar because when I was a child around my 12´s  I remember my dad listening G3 from Satriani, Vai and Johnson, and this is the reason that I became a musician, I remember after school practicing all the time and watching all this video tapes from guitar players like Paul Gilbert, Vinnie Moore etc, I'm 22 now and I've been studying more jazz music, guys like John Scofield and Pat Martino and even Sax players like Sonny Rollins and recently I found this amazing guitar player Charles Altura who is playing with Chick Corea  and he is great jazz player, in my opinion he is the best improviser in the moment. So my influences are from Metal and Rock to Jazz and Fusion and even classical music, I appreciate metal bands like Animals as Leaders and Periphery too.

1-) Primeiramente conte um pouco sobre seu início, Quais foram os principais desafios? E quais suas principais influencias?

Eu comecei a tocar guitarra, por que quando eu era criança, por volta dos meus doze anos, me lembro do meu pai ouvindo o G3 do Satriani, Steve Vai e Eric Johnson, e por causa disso me tornei músico, me lembro que depois da escola eu passava o dia todo praticando e assistindo vídeo aulas de guitarristas como Paul Gilbert, Vinnie Moore, entre outros, Atualmente estou com vinte dois anos e tenho estudado muito Jazz, caras como John Scofield e Pat Martino, também costumo estudar alguns saxofonistas como Sonny Rollins e recentemente pude conhecer um guitarrista incrível chamado Charles Altura, que toca com o Chick Corea, é um grande músico de Jazz, na minha opinião o melhor improvisador do momento, então minhas influencias são do Metal ao Rock e do Jazz ao Fusion, passando pela música clássica, também gosto de bandas de heavy metal como Animal as Leaders e Peripheri.

2-) What is the great moment in your career that you could remember?

There are several beautiful moments that I could experienced, like Guitar Idol 2009, where I got a prize, a nice 7 String Mayones then in 2010 I went to Bucharest for Ziua Chitarelor Contest where I got second place and had the Chance to meet amazing musicians like Andreas Oberg, and Recently I started working with Cort guitars which are really great guitars, I wasn't expecting the great quality they gave to my custom guitars I love them, so last year I had a Latin American tour in Mexico, Guatemala, Peru and Argentina and it was one of the best experiences in my life! A couple of months ago I was in Asia doing clinics and concerts with Cort Guitars, so far it was the most shocking experience in my life and I'm very thankful because today is really hard to tour playing authorial instrumental music, it's just for lucky guys.

2-) Qual o melhor momento da sua carreira que você poderia mencionar?

Há vários momentos legais que eu pude viver, como o Guitar Idol de 2009, como prêmio ganhei uma guitarra Mayones de sete cordas, depois em 2010 fui para Bucareste para o concurso Ziua Chitarelor, onde fiquei em segundo lugar, e tive a oportunidade de encontrar músicos maravilhosos como Andreas Oberg, recentemente passei a trabalhar com a Cort, guitarras maravilhosas, não esperava a impressionante qualidade dos meus modelos de guitarra, adorei elas! Ano passado fiz uma turnê pela América Latina, passando por países como México, Guatemala, Peru e Argentina, e essa foi uma das melhores experiências da minha vida! Alguns meses atrás estive na Ásia trabalhando em algumas clínicas e shows através da Cort, foi uma experiência incrível na minha vida, sou muito agradecido por que atualmente é muito difícil estar em turnê com musicas instrumentais autorais, isso é apenas para pessoas de sorte!

3-) Now a days, what are you studying in guitar? And what kind of music and guitar players you have listened?

I listen a lot of jazz now, and I've been practicing and studying lots of jazz standards and learning all this new scales and vocabulary which really should be expanded my knowledge and open new perspectives in music and life for me. I´ve been listening a lot of guitar players like Charles Altura, Jonathan Kriesberg, Andreas Oberg, but Also getting more into new things like Robert Glasper experiment, Thundercat, Snarky Puppy, Dirty Loops stuff like this, drummer Chris Dave lots of mixtures with jazz and fusion, I also randomly listen to classical and ambient electronic music, and of course I haven't stop listening and enjoying metal and all my first guitar influences.

3-) Atualmente o que anda estudando? E quais gêneros de música e guitarristas têm escutado?

Ultimamente tenho escutado muito jazz, e estudado muitos jazz standards, dessa maneira posso aprender várias escalas e vocabulários que realmente expandem meu conhecimento e me abre outras perspectivas em minha música e em minha vida! Também tenho escutado bastante guitarristas como John Scofield, Jonathan Kriesberg, Andreas Oberg e também tenho procurado coisas novas, tais como Robert Glasper, Thundercat, Snarky Puppy, Dirty Loops, coisas como essas! Bateristas como Chris Dave, muita mistura de jazz e fusion, também tenho escutado música eletrônica, clássica e ambiente, e claro não deixo de escutar e curtir heavy metal e todas minhas primeiras influencias.

4-) Do you know something about Brazilian guitar players? Could you mention some names?

I had the chance to jam with Kiko Loureiro here in Guatemala which was a really shocking and motivating experience, but I already had played with him before in Amsterdam for the Jason Becker festival I had to learn a couple of his songs for this opportunity, I also know some great guys like Andre Nieri and Hussein Haddad.

4-) Você conhece alguns guitarristas brasileiros? Poderia citar alguns nomes?

Tive a oportunidade de tocar com o Kiko Loureiro aqui na Guatemala, o que foi uma experiência maravilhosa e muito motivante, porém eu já havia tocado com ele anteriormente em Amsterdã através de um festival feito em homenagem ao Jason Becker, tive que aprender algumas de suas músicas, também conheço alguns outros grandes guitarristas como André Nieri e Hussien Haddad.

5-) Tell us about your gear, what do you use in studios and stages? Have many differences between them?

I play Cort guitars and I also play Xotic Pedals and for the gear junkies I play V pick and Dean Markley strings, recently I got the Axe Fx and it's been an interesting journey with this thing, for sure it's a great thing for studio because I don't have space and proper equipment to record real amps, so this is great technology, but for real live gigs I always use real amps!

5-) Conte um pouco sobre seu equipamento, o que tem usado em palcos e estúdios? Costuma variar muito?

Uso guitarras Cort, e também pedais da Xotic, de acessórios costumo usar palhetas V, e cordas Dean Markley, recentemente passei a usar Axe Fx, e está sendo interessante trabalhar com isso! Com certeza é a melhor coisa para estúdios, pois não tenho muito espaço e equipamento adequado para gravar amplificadores verdadeiros, então essa tecnologia é impressionante, porém para shows ao vivo sempre costumo usar amplificadores e não simuladores.

6-) About new projects, Are you recording or planning something that you would like to mention here?

I´m working on a new studio album, probably will have 11 songs and I will make new videos for this songs, will be a long process but all my heart and brain is dedicated to this music, I still have to decide things like recording with a real drummer or using superior drummer! I hope to have this new album ready next year!

6-) Sobre novos projetos, você está gravando ou planejando algum lançamento que gostaria de destacar?

Estou trabalhando em um álbum novo que deverá conter onze temas, e para essas músicas farei novos vídeos, é um longo processo, mas meu coração e mente estão dedicados à essas músicas, ainda tenho que decidir certas coisas como, gravar baterias reais, ou escreve-las em programadores! Espero estar com esse trabalho pronto para o ano que vem!

7-) Now a days, we have internet and softwares working so close to the professional music, MP3 files, videos, Myspace, and something like that. What do you think about it, and when it helps us to show our works?

Definitely it helps to share your music and work with all the world, but for sure it doesn't help to sell your music, I think the right way to use internet is to expose your music to the world in order to create more fans, so they can watch your gigs and events, this is the only real way to make music as musician right now, of course you can become a session player or be in a band but for solo artists it's harder, in my case I’m very open minded to new musical adventures and opportunities.

7-) Atualmente temos a Internet e softwares trabalhando lado à lado com a música profissional, arquivos em MP3, vídeos, Myspace e recursos desse gênero. O que você pensa sobre? E em quais pontos isso nos ajuda a divulgar os trabalhos?

Definitivamente ajuda a disseminar sua música com o mundo inteiro, mas com certeza não colabora com as vendas, acredito que a melhor forma de se posicionar em relação a internet é mostrar sua música ao mundo, na intenção de estabelecer novos fãs, pois eles podem assistir seus shows e eventos, essa é a única maneira de fazer música a favor do músico no momento, claro que você pode atuar como um sideman, ou estar em uma banda, porém para artistas solo é difícil, no meu caso sou bem aberto para novas oportunidades e aventuras.

8-) You recently made a tour in Asia, How about that experience? How about the local public and the culture? Did you have others experiences playing in different countries? Could you mention some facts?

I went to 5 cities in China, 2 places in the Philippines, and I went to Taiwan, Singapore, Vietnam, and Thailand, every country is different, even the food, people, sounds, Architecture and general vibe of the place, I really liked all the places and all the food, it was the best experience of my life so far! The audiences were great warm and very perceptive, I think they enjoyed my music and this is a very pleasing feeling, I'm grateful!

8-) Recentemente você esteve em turnê pela Ásia, como foi essa experiência? Conte um pouco sobre o público e suas culturas? Você teve outras experiências tocando em diferentes países? Poderia mencionar outros fatos?

Passei por cinco cidades na China, dois lugares nas Filipinas e também fui para Taiwan, Singapura, Vietnã e Tailândia, cada país tem suas próprias características, culinárias, pessoas sons, arquitetura, a energia como um todo, eu realmente gostei desses lugares e das culinárias, foi a melhor experiência da minha vida até agora! O público é acolhedor e muito perspectivo, acredito que tenham gostado de minhas músicas e me sinto muito grato por isso!

9-) You have some instrumental albums recorded, and it ́s sounds so great! For you what is the most important element for a song sounds good? Musical techniques or felling? What the most important for you?

In my way to see music, I am introspective sometimes, trying to feed my listening and soul or certain needs and ideas I wanna hear in music, but you also have to keep it accessible to the public so you need to balance it! I think music piece or a song can be inspired in different things, on experimenting, on practicing techniques or exploring chords and musical places, and of course feelings, desires, images, memories, and  this is why music is so abstract. I think there is a moment where you can live through your music, your music is you living forever.. I'm a very philosophic guy when it comes to art and music.

9-) Você tem alguns álbuns instrumentais lançados, e realmente são muito bons! Para você qual é o elemento mais importante para uma música soar bem? Técnica ou feeling? O que é mais importante para você?

Na minha maneira de ver música, eu sou meio introspectivo as vezes, tentando alimentar meu ouvido e alma ou certas necessidades e ideias, eu quero ouvir na musica, porém também temos que deixar nossas musicas acessíveis ao público, então temos que balancear isso! Acredito que uma música ou partes dela pode ser inspirada em elementos diferentes em experimentos, em práticas ou explorando alguns acordes e conceitos. Também sentimentos, desejos, imagens, memórias e é por essa causa que a música é tão abstrata! Acredito que há um momento que você pode transparecer sua música e ela é seu meio de vivência, sou uma pessoa muito filosófica quando o assunto é música e arte.
