Entrevista :: Gus G. (Ozzy Osbourne/ Firewind)

Good Night My Friends!! How are you?

We bring to you more one illustrious interviewed here in Guitar Tech! This week I had the honor to make an exclusive interview with nothing more, nothing less than Gus G. guitarist from Ozzy´s band and Firewind. In this interview Gus reveals some details about his beginning on guitar and music, how joined in Ozzy´s band, future plans, talked about gear, brazilians music and our guitar players.

In fact I feel me very happy and honored to interview my idols, is really gratifying have these guys here in my blog talking about their career, projects and etc… Even in my daring dreams I couldn´t believe that one day I´ll be in touch with the principal names of international guitar.

Taking this time I would like to thank my friend Paco Fernandez that enable this interview and one very special thanks to Gus G. which I`m a big fan since his first records with Firewind!

Boa Noite Amigos!! Como vão vocês?

Trazemos até vocês mais um ilustre entrevistado aqui no Guitar Tech! Essa semana tive a honra de bater um papo exclusivo com nada mais nada menos que Gus G. guitarrista da banda do Ozzy Osbourne e Firewind. Na entrevista Gus revela detalhes de seu início, como ingressou na banda de Ozzy, planos futuros, equipamentos, falou também sobre os guitarristas brasileiros e sobre a música brasileira!

De fato me sinto muito feliz e honrado em poder entrevistar ídolos desse patamar, é uma grande alegria ter esses nomes aqui no blog e nem nos meus sonhos mais ousados eu poderia acreditar que um dia teria os principais nomes da guitarra internacional presentes aqui no Guitar Tech!!!

Enfim.... Confiram a entrevista, leiam cada detalhe pois está realmente muito legal!

1-) First of all, tell us a little bit about your beginning, What about the challenges? And who are your first influences?

I started playing at the age of 10. Reason I picked up the guitar was Peter Frampton and the talk box effect. I loved the "talking guitar" thing he did. Some of the first influences besides Frampton were David GIlmour, Santana and after I got into heavier stuff Tony Iommi, Yngwie, Metallica, lots of the Shrapnel guys like Cacophony, Racer X, etc.

1-) Primeiramente, conte nos um pouco sobre seu início. Fale um pouco sobre os desafios e primeiras influencias?

Comecei a tocar guitarra aos dez anos de idade, comecei a tocar por influencia do Peter Frampton e os efeitos de talk box que ele usava. Adorei aquela maneira vocalizada que ele trabalhava com a guitarra. Outras influencias além do Peter foram o David Gilmour, Santana, depois comecei a estudar coisas mais pesadas como Toni Iommi, Yngwie Malmsteen, Metallica, e outros caras que esmirilham a guitarra como Cacophony, Racer X e etc.

2-) Now a days, in your free time, what  you have studied? And what kind of music and guitar players you have listened?

I always keep an open mind. I still like most of the stuff that I liked as a teenager though. I still practice the stuff I know, so I can make it better but I try to expand my "bag of licks". 

2-) Atualmente, em suas horas livres, o que costuma estudar? Quais gêneros musicais e guitarristas tem escutado?

Sempre mantenho minha mente aberta! Ainda curto muita coisa do tempo de adolescência, continuo praticando as coisas que conheço, posso fazer isso melhor, mas tento expandir minha "coleção de licks".

3-) Do you know something about Brazilian guitar players? Could you mention some names?

You have some amazing players in Brazil. Your traditional music has many influences and exotic rhythms, so I can see why lots of musicians from Brazil are advanced and it feels natural to them. Obviously Kiko & Rafael from Angra are awesome and so is Andreas Kisser of Sepultura. There's more that I'm forgetting right now.

3-) Conhece alguma coisa sobre os guitarristas brasileiros? Poderia mencionar alguns nomes?

Vocês possuem alguns guitarristas maravilhosos no Brasil. A música brasileira possui diversas influencias e ritmos exóticos. Vejo que muitos músicos brasileiros desenvolvem isso de forma natural. Obviamente Kiko e Rafael do Angra são incríveis e também o Andreas Kisser do Sepultura, tem outros também que no momento não consigo me lembrar.

4-) Talking about your gear, what do you use in studios and stages? Have many differences between them?

I mainly use my signature ESP guitars, almost 99,9% of the time. Regarding the amps - on stage I use my signature Blackstar "Blackfire 200" model and in studio I use it as well, but combine it with different amps depending on the situation. I've recorded with lots of amps over the years. My pedalboard is very simple, just a tuner, a chorus, wah wah pedal and a delay that I use live. My main tone come from my amp.

4-) Falando sobre equipamento, o que costuma usar em estúdios e palcos? Costuma variar muito entre ambas as situações?

Geralmente uso minha ESP signature em 99,9% das situações. Em relação aos amps uso o Blacksatar "Blackfire 200" que também é um modelo signature , o qual também uso em estúdio, as vezes combino outros amps dependendo da situação. Nos últimos anos usei inúmeros amplificadores para gravar. Meu pedalboard é muito simples uso apenas um afinador, um chorus, um pedal de wah wah e um delay que uso ao vivo. Meu timbre vem do amplificador.

5-) About new projects, Are you recording or planning something new whit your projects (Ozzy Osbourne and Firewind) that you would like to mention here?

I'm still touring for my recent solo album "Brand New Revolution" which came out last July. We're planning to make a new Firewind album later this year. As for Ozzy, it's hard to say. It all depends how far Sabbath continues into the future.

5-) Sobre novos projetos. Está panejando ou registrando algo novo com seus projetos (Ozzy Osbourne e Firewind) que gostaria de mencionar?

Estou em turnê divulgando meu álbum solo "Brand New Revelution" que foi lançado em Julho do ano passado. Estamos planejando um novo trabalho com o Firewind ainda esse ano. Com o Ozzy é mais difícil de dizer. Depende muito do futuro do Black Sabbath.

6-) Now a days, we have internet and softwares working so close to the professional music, MP3 files, videos, twitter, facebook, and something like that. What do you think about it, and when it helps us to increase our works?

I like technology, it helps for sure and connects people easier all over the world. Of course there's a downside to that as well. People have gotten more lazy, music has been devaluated and it's harder for musicians to make their living. But even before the Internet, a musician had to tour to make a living. It might be harder these days, but the best way to spread the word on your music, is to go out there and play.

6-) Atualmente temos a internet e alguns softwares trabalhando lado a lado com a música profissional, arquivos em MP3, vídeos, redes sociais e muito mais. O que você pensa sobre? E como isso pode ajudar a divulgar nossos trabalhos?

Eu gosto da tecnologia, com certeza ajuda e conecta as pessoas ao redor do mundo facilmente. Claro que também tem um lado negativo, as pessoas estão se tornando mais preguiçosas, a música tem ficado cada vez mais desvalorizada e difícil dos músicos se manterem na profissão, porém mesmo antes da internet o músico para se manter na profissão tinha que estar em turnê, talvez atualmente seja ainda mais difícil, mas a melhor maneira de divulgar sua música é sair e tocar.

7-) What was the greatest moment in your career that you could remember? Or the greatest concert?

I can't put aside just one moment. My career has had many great moments and I've been fortunate to have played many amazing concerts. Some of them in your country! I have the best memories from Brazil and my South American tours with Ozzy!

7-) Qual o melhor momento na sua carreria? Ou o melhor show?

Não consigo pensar em apenas um momento. Minha carreira tem inúmeros grandes momentos, e me sinto muito afortunado de ter feito muitos shows incríveis, alguns deles em seu país. Minhas melhores memórias que tenho são das turnês no Brasil e na América do Sul com o Ozzy!

8-) It's nothing new about you presence in the acclaimed Ozzy Osbourne´s band. Tell us something about your entry! And what about the sensation of playing in one of the biggest heavy metal bands in the world?

I would have never thought I'd be where I'm at! It's crazy to think that I've been w/ Ozzy for almost 7 years now!

It's an amazing feeling to play with a living legend and getting to play all these classic songs. What can I say, I just try to do my best always and play the best I can for Ozzy and for his fans. 

8-) Não é mais nenhuma novidade sua presença na aclamada banda de Ozzy Osbourne. Conte um pouco sobre sua entrada. E como é a sensação de  estar tocando em uma das maiores bandas de heavy metal do mundo?

Nunca pensei que um dia poderia estar onde estou hoje. É muito louco pensar que estou tocando com a banda do Ozzy por quase sete anos. É um sentimento maravilhoso estar ao lado de uma lenda viva tocando esses clássicos. O que posso dizer, Sempre tento fazer meu melhor e tocar o melhor que posso para o Ozzy e seus fãs.
