Entrevista :: Joel Hoekstra (Whitesnake)

Hey Friends!!! How are you??

First of all! I believe in this moment we have many reason to make this a very special moment for Guitar Tech, this is the post number #500 in all these years actively working with internet! And the other reason is be able to have this illustrious interviewed!!! Joel Hoekstra from Whitesnake.

Whitesnake always had the great guitarists in their formations, musically is a kind of prerequisite! And for this time isn´t different!! Joel is a very talented musician who plays various musical genres masterfully! 

Since my childhood I used to keep up the band!! It´s a great moment for my work, I´m very happy to be in touch with this talented guitarrist! The interview is do nice! Joel talks about your beginning e how his parents influenced him! Talks about new projects, guitar gears, about talks about how was the moment he joined Whitesnake and how is the band´s daily! Well!! An awesome interview!!! Don´t miss any detail!!

Olá Amigos!!! Tudo bem com vocês?

Acredito que temos motivos de sobra para fazer dessa entrevista um momento muito especial para o blog, primeiramente essa é a postagem de número 500 em todos esses anos trabalhando ativamente com o Guitar Tech! O outro motivo é contarmos com esse ilustre entrevistado!!! Joel Hoekstra guitarrista do Whitesnake! 

O Whitesnake sempre teve os melhores guitarristas do mundo em suas formações, musicalmente isso é exigido, e dessa vez não tem sido diferente! Joel é um guitarrista muito talentoso que domina diversos gêneros musicais com maestria!

Para mim fã de Whiteskane posso dizer que é um marco muito importante para o meu trabalho, estou imensamente feliz em poder trocar uma ideia com esse talentoso guitarrista, o papo foi muito legal ao longo da entrevista Joel falou sobre seu início na música e como seus pais o influenciaram! Falou sobre novos projetos, equipamentos, sobre como foi entrar no Whitesnake e como é o cotidiano da banda!!! Enfim! uma entrevista ilustre!!! Não perca nenhum detalhe!

1-) First of all, tell us a little bit about your beginning, What about the challenges? And who are your first influences?

My parents are classical musicians and they had me playing cello and piano as a young boy.  When I heard AC/DC at the age of 11, I decided I wanted to play guitar.  Angus Young really made me want to start. In the beginning I was very much into heavy metal: Ozzy, Black Sabbath, Iron Maiden, Scorpions were some of my other favorites.  From there I got into melodic bands like Journey, Foreigner, Boston.  I also really like progressive bands like Rush and Yes as well as classic rock bands like Led Zeppelin, The Doors and Pink Floyd.

1-) Primeiramente fale um pouco sobre seu início na música, Quais foram os primeiros desafios e quem eram as primeiras influências?

Meus pais eram músicos eruditos e me colocaram para aprender piano e cello quando eu era criança. Aos onze anos ouvi a banda AC/DC e decidi que iria ticar guitarra. No início eu curtia muito Heavy Metal: Ozzy Osbourne, Black Sabbath, Iron Maiden, Scorpions eram minhas bandas favoritas, após conhecer tais bandas passei a ouvir bandas mais melódicas como Journey, Foreigner, Boston. Também aprecio bastante as bandas de rock progressivo como Rush e Yes, e também as clássicas como Led Zeppelin, The Doors e Pink Floyd.

2-) Now a days, what are you studying in guitar? And what kind of music and guitar players you have listened?

I’m usually just working on whatever music I have to work on for my career and hopefully learning through that.  I’d still love to have a period in my life where I set aside 8 hours a day to just practice, but playing shows and traveling cuts into that.  But that’s a good problem to have.

2-) Atualmente o que tem estudado? Qual gênero musical e guitarristas que tem escutado?

No momento estou trabalhando com várias coisas que envolvem música, tenho que conduzir minha carreira e tento aprender coisas novas com isso. Eu adoro ter um período da minha vida, onde eu sento durante umas oito horas por dia apenas para treinar, porém estar na estrada e fazendo muitos shows atrapalha um pouco os estudos! Mas não há problemas com isso!

3-) Do you know something about Brazilian guitar players? Could you mention some names?

The only ones I can think of off-hand are Kiko Loureiro and Bill Hudson.  2 killer players, for sure.

3-) Conhece alguma coisa sobre os guitarristas brasileiros? Poderia ressaltar alguns nomes?

Conheço apenas dois, Kiko Loureiro e Bill Hudson, com certeza dois guitarristas matadores.

 4-) Tell us about your gear, what do you use in studios and stages? Have many differences between them?

With Whitesnake I use Gibson Les Pauls, Fender Strats, Atomic Guitars, Taylor acoustics, Friedman BE-100 amps and a Fractal AXE-FX II for my effects.  Gigs like Rock of Ages and Trans Siberian Orchestra that required me playing direct I used the Fractal for everything.  In Rock of Ages I used EVH and Jackson guitars because they were appropriate for the gig.

4-) Conte um pouco sobre seu equipamento. O que costuma usar em palcos e estúdios? Alguma diferença entre essas duas situações?

Com o Whitesnake eu uso as seguintes guitarras: Gibson Les Paul e Fender Stratocaster, para violões costumo usar modelos da Taylor, na parte dos amplificadores uso um Friedman BE-100 e o Fractal AXE-FX II para alguns efeitos. Shows com o Rock of Ages e Trans Siberian Orchestra as quais costumo tocar direto uso o Fractal para tudo, na parte de guitarras uso EVH e Jackson, pois são guitarras apropriadas para esse tipo de show.

5-) About new projects, Are you recording or planning something new that you would like to mention here?

My new album Joel Hoekstra’s 13 – Dying to Live just came out 10/16/15 on Frontiers Records.  It features some amazing musicians: Russell Allen (Symphony X) and Jeff Scott Soto on vocals, Vinny Appice (Dio/Black Sabbath) on drums, Tony Franklin (The Firm/Blue Murder) on bass and Derek Sherinian (Black Country Communion) on keys.  I also just played a bit on Michael Sweet’s upcoming solo album and we will be writing a project album together this year as well.

5-) Sobre novos projetos. Está gravando ou planejando alguma coisa nova que gostaria de mencionar?

Meu novo álbum “Joel Hoekstra`s 13 – Dying to Live” será lançado na segunda quinzena de outubro pela Frontiers Records. Contará com a participação de músicos incríveis, tais como: Russell Allen (Symphony X) e Jeff Scott Soto nos, Vinny Appice (Dio/ Black Sabbath) na bateria, Tony Franklin (The Firm/ Blue Murder) no baixo e Derek Sherinian (Black Country Communion) nos teclados. Também estou  participando do próximo CD do Michael Sweet, também estaremos desenvolvendo um projeto novo.

6-) Now a days, we have internet and softwares working so close to the professional music, MP3 files, videos, twitter, facebook, and something like that. What do you think about it, and when it helps us to increase our works?

I think social media is a great way to interact more with supporters.  I think it’s a positive thing.  File sharing and recording from home has its ups and downs.  I think the fact people are on their own and can be creative and do lots of takes without feeling pressured/inhibited would be the biggest positive.

6-) Atualmente temos a internet e softwares trabalhando lado à lado com a música, arquivos em MP3, vídeos redes sociais e algumas coisas do gênero, O que pensa sobre? E como essas ferramentas podem ajudar a disseminar nossos trabalhos?

Acredito que as mídias sociais sejam o melhor caminho para interagir com empresas e patrocinadores, acho isso algo positivo, a possibilidade de compartilhar arquivos e poder gravar dentro de um estúdio caseiro tem altos e baixos. Acredito que pelo fato das pessoas estarem produzindo as coisas da sua própria forma sem pressão alheia pode ajudar a desenvolver melhor a questão criativa.

7-) What about the greatest moment in your career that you could remember? Or a greatest concert?

The 2 that stand out are my first show with Night Ranger in 2007.  I learned 25 songs and played a show with them on no rehearsal and a limited soundcheck.  It was extremely stressful.  The other one is filling in for Mick Jones of Foreigner on 24 hrs notice in 2011.  I had to learn the set in a day, fly and went on in front of 18,000 people.  Crazy!

7-) Qual foi o melhor momento da sua carreira? Ou o show mais importante?

Meu primeiro show com a banda Night Ranger em 2007, tive que aprender 25 músicas, sem ensaios e uma passagem de som limitada. Foi realmente muito estressante, outro momento que me lembro foi quando tive que substituir o Mick Jones do Foreingner, em 2011, sendo que recebi o set list no mesmo dia do show, tudo isso tocando na frente de 18.000 pessoas! Loucura!

8-) You have a very particular way of playing, listening your music is easy to find a lot of rich musical elements like fusion, jazz, blues, country and something acoustic too. How you developed such techniques? What were your influences for that?

I’ve studied jazz/classical and having TJ Helmerich and Brett Garsed as friends really influenced me a lot in terms of fusion.  Country and blues are very popular in Chicago where I grew up, so I got my feet wet in most areas, but my true love is rock.

8-) Você possui uma maneira muito particular de tocar, ouvindo suas composições é fácil perceber muitas sonoridades próximas do fusion, jazz, blues, country e algumas linhas acústicas. Como desenvolveu tais técnicas? Quais foram suas influencias nesse quesito?

Eu estudei jazz e música clássica, e ter amigos como TJ Helmerich e Brett Garsed me influenciou bastante em termos de fusion. Country e blues são gêneros muito populares em Chicago onde cresci, então dei meus passos em várias áreas, porém o que eu realmente gosto é rock!

9-) Talking about Whitesnake. Please, tell us some details about your entry in the band. Witch were the first challenge and learning?

I put out some feelers when I heard there was an opening and also some well-respected people recommended me to David.  That led to us meeting in May 2014 for an audition.  Since then we recorded The Purple Album and went on a World Tour.  It’s been great.  Music is always a challenge, so I treat all of the material with respect and hope for the best!

9-) Falando sobre o Whitesnake. Por favor, comente alguns detalhes sobre sua entrada na banda. Quais foram os primeiros desafios e aprendizados?

Quando soube que havia uma vaga, fiquei esperto! E também algumas pessoas muito respeitadas desse meio me recomendaram ao David, o que levou a nos encontrar em maio de 2014 para uma audição. Após isso iriam gravar o “The Purple Album” e sair em turnê mundial. Tem sido maravilhoso. Música é sempre um desafio, então trabalhei no material da banda com muito respeito e esperança para o melhor.

10-) Now being in the band for some time, how is the daily of a musician who works in a renowned band, like Whitesnake, talk a little bit about your adapting process.

David Coverdale always has something going on, so it’s basically trying to keep up with him.  The guys in the band are all so talented and nice.  We all get along great, so adapting has been easy.

10-) Estando na banda por um tempo, como é o dia à dia de um músico que toca em  uma banda conceituada como o Whitesnake, comente um pouco sobre o processo de adaptação? 

Com o David Coverdade tem sempre alguma coisa rolando, basicamente tento me manter próximo e acompanhar tudo isso, os caras da banda são muito legais e talentosos. Todos nós nos damos muito bem, logo o processo de adaptação foi muito tranquilo.

11-) What do you think was the differential for you been chosen to join the band?

I think it’s a combination of having the playing abilities, the look and the personality for the band.  It’s the same as getting any other gig.  You have to be the right fit.

11-) Na sua opinião qual foi o diferencial para ser escolhido para entrar na banda?

Acredito que a habilidade em saber tocar várias coisas, o foco e a personalidade da banda, é como estar em outro show qualquer. Você deve estar no ponto certo!
